I was listening to a friend talk about her recent break-up and all the plans she had in mind to retaliate, get even, forgive, move on, play, and manipulate, when i caught myself contradicting every statement with “dont be that girl!” Its been years since I’ve seriously felt my heart ache and even more years since I’ve felt similarly as my friend did today. And yet despite the number of years that have passed I still find that there are a few valuable lessons I’ve acquired by both giving in and holding back.

I know just how painful it can be to be betrayed, to part ways amicably and yet feel it sting, and to be beaten down by someone who only had their interests in mind. I know the anger that brews and the power it has to either inspire or kill, and I know the sleepless nights that feel like their dragging on far too long.

I understand temptation and the itch to act. I also understand consequences and the famous cliché of betraying the self and this is why tonight I am writing with all you ladies in mind by givin you my two cents and saying, DONT BE THAT GIRL.

Don’t be the girl who acts on impulse and regrets it in the morning, or fine be her and discover it for yourself.

Don’t be that girl whom he puts so high up on a pedestal that you summon your own downfall because you’ve become so cynical.

Don’t be that girl who’s never played and wants to play, the thrill will not last.

Don’t be that girl who lurks and stalks either because you’re just messing with your own head.

Don’t especially be that girl who knows shes been replaced yet insists on a permanent place at the table. Respect relationships and think that theyre as good as married.

Don’t be that girl who’s afraid of self-expansion and exploration, there is so much more to you than you are aware of and you’ll be happy to know that being single is also the best time for you to love yourself.

Lastly, dont be that girl who self-criticizes. We cannot control other people’s choices. Go easy on yourself because I sure know how painful all that can be, but in the end only you and yourself go thru this journey and you’ll be lucky enough to encounter a few friends along the way.
